February 2025 - Supplicant's Morning Round
About the Image(s)
In the 4,000 Islands area of southern Laos, on Don Khone (our island's name) we saw the morning rounds of the local monks. It's a pleasant ritual that happens daily as locals fill their food bowls.
Canon PowerShot, f/5, 1/250, ISO400

To me its a very interesting image. The elements surrounding the main subject let me know the prevailing situation. I do not consider the row of bicycles as a distraction, but a part of white cycle which is to extreme left could be eliminated.
You are lucky to capture images reflecting daily life of monks.   Posted: 02/16/2025 07:30:28

Thanks Subhash, I agree it would be better without the white bike, but my understanding of PJ shots is one is not allowed to remove anything. Too bad, it would help some images to tweak them just a bit.   Posted: 02/16/2025 09:08:29
Leslie Larson, I know we cannot make changes in PJ image but what I had in my mind while writing here was a thought, you could try making this image from a different angle. In that thought I did not think this could give you such an angle of view which you may not like to capture the situation.
You may try this image also in travel category.   Posted: 02/17/2025 09:54:04

I find the image interesting because of the setting and the activity, which is uncommon where I live. I think it is less dynamic because I don't see the facial expressions well, and it would contribute to the story if I could see what is being handed out. I know it very well might not have been possible, but you might have had a better point of view shooting from the other side where we could see more of the front of the people.   Posted: 02/18/2025 18:23:56
You are probably right. I find not being seen taking the photo is my objective. It's hard to get candid shots without being noticed.   Posted: 02/19/2025 10:36:45
Nice. We see the monk's bowl open. The food being placed in the bowl. The bicycle does not bother. It can be assumed from the surrounding background.
There is part of the face of both the monk and the supplicant. Well done,   Posted: 02/21/2025 14:40:12

You have captured the story you wanted. You might try moving around to see if you could find a different POV that would minimize any potentially distracting elements. Lastly if you can avoid being a distraction yourself that would be great.   Posted: 02/23/2025 15:38:27
Nice. I wonder if shot from the other side we'd see what's in the bag and lose the bike.   Posted: 02/23/2025 19:50:20
probably a better position...but alas, it is what it is. I would love to go back to that area to reshoot a lot of things now that I'm more familiar with my camera. But Laos is a long plane ride away, and it's not likely to happen at my age.   Posted: 02/23/2025 20:09:33
I know what you mean. Every time someone recommends I shoot from a lower angle, I remember my knee problems and think, "not if I ever plan to get up again..."   Posted: 02/23/2025 20:16:52
ho ho, ditto for me. Creaky knees...the bane of my life   Posted: 02/24/2025 10:24:59
