Old Times Workshop by John Larson, FPSA, GMPSA

November 2025 - Old Times Workshop

About the Image(s)

During the Photo Tours at the September 2025 PSA Festival I took the Pittock tour which also included a walking tour of some old buildings that were maintained to show how some of the older crafts were performed. In particular this area was an old wood shop where are repairs that were needed were performed. Of course these repairs had to be kept in tune with the times of the buildings.

I think you have shown an interesting portion of the scene that shows some of the previous-era workshop equipment, and the various tones, shapes, and lines of the wood really add interest. I would have liked to see a little more of the third person that is mostly hidden by the man with his back to the viewer to show more of the human interaction. I'm not sure if maybe the building itself was tilted, but I wonder if you could have lifted the left side of the photo a little, as it appears to be sliding downward a bit, although the vertical lines appear straight.   Posted: 11/12/2025 09:59:09

Lovely muted tones in your workshop. One can almost smell the sawdust. The 3 do need more separation. Focus throughout looks good. I agree with Ardeth, it could use a bit of straightening. It would have been nice if they'd actually been working on something.   Posted: 11/12/2025 11:03:07

An excellent image of an old wood shop. Like the others, I would be expecting better interaction of the 3 major characters and perhaps one or two repaired woodcrafts to give the additional atmosphere.
(In fact, a few old wooden toys are stored over the shelves of cupboard, their appearance being masked/hidden by the large collection of raw wood materials.)   Posted: 11/14/2025 17:57:15

To me its a good image for Human Interest. Yes a little straightening and some activity with tools could add more interest to this image.
Generally on such visits one is in a bit hurry thus avoid waiting for some action to happen.   Posted: 11/17/2025 20:53:45

I think you have the potential for an interesting image here as it brings back memories of time gone by, but also has a range of textures. As Leslie suggests, you can almost smell the sawdust. I also agree with Subhash that it feels that this has been a rushed shot, and a little time, a slightly different placement of yourself would include all 3 subjects as well as an idea of the project in hand. I have straightened up the image as well as corrected the exposure for the bottom half of the image.   Posted: 11/18/2025 01:59:53
