Opening ceremony of Rugby 7 Hong Kong by Maurice Ping Leung

June 2026 - Opening ceremony of Rugby 7 Hong Kong

About the Image(s)

Rugby 7 was played in Hong Kong over the weekend, starting 17 April.
This is now an annual event. There was a formal closing ceremony with
pop-singers, lion dance and fireworks. But the opening started early
and simple. The first game started around 10 am. I was there and took
a picture with an almost empty stadium--may be a few hundred people
attended. The first two teams lined up to enter the stadium and passed
the golden trophy to be awarded to the champion. Smoke and bright
lights added a little atmosphere to the deserted stadium. One of the
team members with light blue stripes is recognizable as being from
Argentina.
The stadium would be packed with spectators after lunch.

Smoke and colourful lights did add to the atmosphere, but as the image has been shot from behind the players who seem running with excitement, I missed observing their facial expressions.
In such a sports event my emphasis could be on capturing excitement on faces of players and audience.   Posted: 06/13/2026 10:01:02

Viewing the facial expression of the players is an excellent suggestion--but this is the only door available to the ordinary spectators, unless I have special permit. Alternatively, one would have to walk to the opposite side of the stadium and use a 600mm telephoto to catch the facial expression of the players. I might want to try next year!   Posted: 06/16/2026 17:43:06

The colored smoke and the varied bright sun give a remarkable effect. It is odd to have so few onlookers in the stands. Still, a remarkable photo, with a lot of visual appeal. Nice.   Posted: 06/15/2026 18:48:47
