It was helpful to understand that the image captures a procession. This explains why people in the background are facing different directions. The moment captured shows the batons framing the drummer's face drawing attention to him. I think cropping tighter puts more focus on the drummer.   Posted: 11/03/2024 04:18:37

that's more compact. This person is only totally visible. Somehow bit of every drummer is out of the frame. Just wondering if square images are less impactful.   Posted: 11/04/2024 04:58:17

I crop based on the image content, (subject, background), and what I want the viewer to see (story) Different crops of the same image might convey different stories and often I might have a two crops for the same image. If your story is drums and music, then your landscape crop shows four drums of different sizes and the eye moves in a clockwise manner around the drums. The eye stays on the drums because they are the brighter area. If the emphasis is the musicians, then the alternative crop I suggested focuses on the musicians. The batons frame the drummer, and the color orange (symbolic of joy and happiness) predominates.
Images may be used for different purposes: stand alone image; part of a portfolio; or part of a story. Thus one may choose to crop them in different ways to convey the story.

Hi Arunima, Being close to the 'action' (front drummer) is an effective way to create dimension in an image. I like both the original and cropped variations. I'm looking for the drummer for the green kettle drum. While the cropped version does emphasize the foreground drummer, it makes his large drum less imposing and partially negates the clockwise flow around the image to him. Overall, I like the scene particularly for its intimacy and dimensional quality. Karl   Posted: 11/05/2024 09:37:56
