Spam under Lock and Key by Birgit Langmann

February 2025 - Spam under Lock and Key

About the Image(s)

Samsung phone, ISO 340, 1.0, f1.8, 5mm lens.

Walking through a local Walmart, I saw the Spam under lock and key. I can only assume it's due to thefts. This particular Walmart has a homeless population that hangs around, begging for money and other goods. It is also not a safe place at all.

I realize that it's not a photogenic image. The other food locked up is Pilot bread, also a stable among the homeless and Bush population.

Hi Birgit, It's not only Walmart where you live, but Walmarts here in Delaware, USA, where car parts, spray paint and other 'desirable' things are locked up and your receipt is checked upon leaving the store. It might help if a person was in the picture staring at the Spam or opening the cabinet with a key. I didn't get the 'locked up' aspect for a minute and read the description. It's a sad state of affairs particularly since staff is reduced and finding someone with a key is difficult and time consuming if even possible.
You made a good observation and were able to get the image by phone rather than an obvious camera. Maybe a little vignetting around the Spam would help bring out the message. Karl   Posted: 02/09/2025 11:08:30

It's not only locked but under security video surveillance.
There is a small blue sticker in some of the windows letting you know it's being watched.   Posted: 02/10/2025 10:03:18

Hi Birgit - I like your description of what you were drawn to in this image, but I don't think the image clearly shows what you were wanting to convey. I agree with Karl that having a person (or two) in the image would have increased the interest, although of course you would have needed to find a shot that strengthened the story. Maybe someone unlocking it, with someone else waiting for the spam?   Posted: 02/16/2025 16:12:03
