February 2025 - Scoring a Try
About the Image(s)
Scoring a Try was made at the US Collegiate Rugby Championships in Chester, Pennsylvania. I used a Nikon D800 with Nikkor 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens at ISO 500, 1/1000 second, and f/7.1. The goalpost sign tells the viewer what this event is.
I find rugby to be a challenge since the action can go in so many directions. The visual good news is that players are not encumbered with lots of protective equipment so their expressions can be seen.

This is an excellent capture showing the expression on the men's face, dynamic movement, with the three men framing the man catching the ball. It is interesting how you positioned yourself to capture the goal post sign which describes the event. The sign does draw the viewer's eyes. However, the arms pointing to the right (man behind the sign and man catching the ball), pull the viewer's attention back into the centre of the frame.

What a great image! Lots of action, interesting expressions on the guys' faces, and all those feet off the ground! The sign on the goalpost has the benefit of telling the viewer what we're seeing, but it also cuts off the guy on the right, which is a shame. I'd like to see all of him. But this was out of your control. Great job!   Posted: 02/16/2025 15:58:07

I was situated between the goal posts to be able to photograph action on either side. I liked the image because it had two characteristics of sports photography: capture the moment and tell a story so that a big caption isn't needed.   Posted: 02/17/2025 09:29:03
Overall I like the goal and players moving. The sign is a bit too big of a part of the photo. You could crop out part of the sign but keep the smaller writing so it tells us what it is but not have large letter take over the photo.   Posted: 02/21/2025 09:49:12
