July 2025 - Hoisting the Sail
About the Image(s)
Date taken: June 7, 2025
Camera: SONY DSC-RX10M4
Lens: 24-600mm F2.4-4.0
Focal length in 35mm: 77mm
Exposure: 1/320 sec; f/5.6; ISO 100
We visited Newport RI in June and took a sail on the 90-foot schooner Adirondack. These crew members hoisted the sail as we were leaving the harbor. We could have helped but it was more fun to watch them do all the work! There was perfect wind for a two hour sail.

Hi Carolyn, The RX10 is my favorite all-around camera. The crew in identical T-shirts are pulling on ropes but sail raising isn't very apparent. Zooming the RX10 to 24mm to get the sail would have helped the story. That would yield a very vertical image which seems to go against all PSA digital sizing preferring horizontal images like the 1024x768 specification for this Digital Dialogue. Hi Karl, thanks for your comment. I took other photos that showed more of the sails but unfortunately one of the crew member's faces was always hidden.   Posted: 07/07/2025 18:24:18
Your Sony RX10M4 is my go to camera especially when traveling and not wanting to carry lenses and camera. I agree with Karl the picture shows two people pilling ropes and not raising the sail   Posted: 07/08/2025 10:20:23

It might have been interesting perspective to shoot from low. I always look for something like a different perspective to make images stand out. But I like the vertical. Maybe increase the saturation?Too bad that rope is partially in front of her face, but at least most of her face shows.   Posted: 07/08/2025 14:27:31
