About the Image(s)

Title: At the Summit NYC
Camera: Sony RX10
Lens: 24-600mm F2.4-4.0
Focal length: 8.8mm (in 35mm: 24mm)
Exposure: 1/30 sec; f/8; ISO 100 hand held

The Summit, next to Grand Central Terminal in midtown New York City, is quite the experience. You pay a sum to take an elevator up about 60 floors and enter an environment that is entirely glass: floors, windows, ceilings for about 9 stories. For an extra amount you can pay more to ride up a glass elevator on the outside of the building to experience an expansive view of NYC. We chose not to do that.

It is an attraction geared to millenials and younger, but for the friends who were with my husband and me, they were dizzied by the whole thing and wanted to leave. I wish I could have stayed longer, because the dynamics of people in this environment was fascinating as they all posed with their cameras and cellphones to take selfies. I consider it street photography, but perhaps also travel photography due to the appearance of the iconic Empire State building.

I have another photo of this scene, more vertical, that I call "A Dizzying View of NYC" in honor of my friends. It has received many acceptances in PID monochrome and local exhibits. Today I went through my archives and found this one. Would love your reaction as a PJ general photo.

Happy New Year to everyone! My hope for you is that you find happiness and health in your lives and enjoy wonderful adventures. My hope for the world is more peace and less conflict on this one planet we all share.

Hi Carolyn, This is a fascinating image from my favorite do-it-all camera, the Sony RX-10. The bigger mirror (?) sections in this view form a huge cross. We wonder about each of the people up so high above life in the street. I like the image more as travel than PJ. The long dynamic range of the image is terrific. This will be a bucket list location for me. I agree with your hopes for 2026. You can find me regularly at some local demonstration. Karl   Posted: 01/09/2026 16:15:27

That is a real trippy photo with lots of different angles. I can't figure which to look at first! Very cool.   Posted: 01/20/2026 14:02:33
