Estudiantinas by Laurie Bergner

January 2026 - Estudiantinas

About the Image(s)

In the little Mexico town of Guanajuato, groups of "estudiantinas", young musicians dressed in 17th century costumes of Spanish students. They lead visitors through narrow alleys and into small plazas, singing and entertaining them with tunes that tell stories of myths and legends, as well as jokes. It's a tradition that has been carried out in Guanajuato since 1881! Apparently the tradition started in 16th century Spain as a way for low-income students to get something to eat. We had a great time following them through the town.

Looks like the musicians and students are both enjoying themselves. The colors and atmosphere is warm and inviting. Well done.   Posted: 01/20/2026 14:18:06
