July 2026 - Cowboys Gather Before the Rodeo

One of the things I enjoy about photographing rodeos are the interesting things happening besides what's going on in the arena. I was walking around and found this area where the cowboys prepare for their upcoming rides. I was fortunate to have my camera ready and was quick enough to capture this scene of two cowboys happy to see each other. The other thing that got me walking around was seeing what I may capture bathed in the warm, almost sunset light.
I handheld a Canon EOS R5 Mark 2 with a 70-200mm lens at 80mm, ISO 800, 1/2000 sec, f2.8. Shooting in manual mode with exposure compensation +1/3 stop.

Hi Frederick, The image shows a great interaction. I'm a bit puzzled by the black hat. I recall photographing the Calgary Stampede where all competitors and accredited journalists had to wear white hats. This must be some bad-assed dude! Beautiful exposure and light at the best moment. I agree that it's interesting and fun to see what else there is to photograph besides the actual competition. I love the interaction with these two! A busy background so helpful to have the low fstop. It would have been better if that gal in the background weren't there so the guy in the black hat were separated from people behind him, but what can you do? Really nice capture.
