October 2026 - World Class Jumper
About the Image(s)
As an international equestrian sport photographer, I occasionally found myself trying to photograph the world's best equestrians and horses in indoor arenas. The Show Jumping World Cup is an indoor event. To compensate for the awful mercury vapor lighting, I photographed in black & white. To convey the movement and action, I used a long exposure while panning with the horse. In this case, the jump is an 'oxer' or spread obstacle where the horse is airborne and moving horizontally. This photograph of Melanie Smith riding the great jumper, Calypso, was successful out of many attempts.

Wow. Outstanding and beautiful to capture both human and animal in such a symbiotic relationship to accomplish this task.
In a perfect and somewhat unrealistic world, it would be awesome for woman and horse to be more crisp and clear, but it is rather obvious that they are both moving at a certain velocity that would make that challenging.   Posted: 10/17/2026 12:35:08
