Biking along the highway on the bike path towards Banff there were several of these electrified pads that we could bike over. It is to prevent bears from going into some areas. This one is just a few miles from downtown Banff. Walkers, those with pups or horses were to use the gate to the right. Bikers can ride over the electrified pad (rubber tires).
I did not test it.
And in about 1000 miles of biking last month, I saw only one bear.

Hi Birgit, Yes, the world is full of paranoia of things with low probability. After all, it is the bears' turf. Perhaps having people pass through one of the gates would enhance the story with some life. This image is static and depends on reading the signs closely to get the situation. I agree with you. Unfortunately, there was only me at that time.
While I did not see many bears, I saw tons of bear evidence. And I'm sure bears saw me. There were many places where I smelled them but did not see them, so they were close. Posted: 10/17/2026 11:32:08
