February 2025 - Surfer Girls
About the Image(s)
This is a questionable one, but I couldn't help myself. Not an unusual beach shot
I guess, but not living anywhere near a beach, it surprises me to see the newest
beach fashions. I am glad to see ladies with surf boards now. It wasn't quite so
common 60 years ago. The day was overcast, but it didn't deter determined surfers.
It was taken with my Sony RX100M7 at 1/200, F/7.1, ISO 800

Hi Leslie. A rather recent shot of girls on the beach, in my day girls would often only parade on the sandy edge in bikinis. A good photo showing the contemporary nature of changing roles and activities in society. I also like the back shot of the subjects as they cannot be identified this gives them a typical look of the time, not a face shot that can give further interpretation of them, they could even be cross gender.
From an Australian perspective good to see one girl wearing a t-shirt as the sun's rays in the long term can cause skin cancers of unspeakable proportions. Times may change but the suns rays haven't.   Posted: 02/10/2025 16:14:03

Hi Leslie. I did have a laugh about this one and I have a similar one that (until now) I've been reluctant to use. Yes, this is the changing way of the world and you have to admire this. I love that the girls are also out there surfing and not just sitting on the beach watching the boys (as they did in my day!). Even the t-shirt made me chuckle.
I like the story here, as we are just observers. The weather is uninviting but the enthusiasm continues. Good choice of settings. The image is uncluttered, but the addition of the parent/ child in the background is a nice addition.
As for Ron's comment about the sun's rays, the current (stupid) trend in Australia is to sunbake with a necklace/ pendant/ shape on your body so that you get a white shape on your tan line. Not everyone is sunscreen conscious.   Posted: 02/13/2025 13:32:16

I was a redhead and I hate to admit what we used to do pre-sunscreen days. We lined a box with tinfoil, then slathered a mixture of iodine and baby oil all over us before climbing in the box. Adolescent dumb!   Posted: 02/13/2025 15:31:40
yes, but I was lucky in that I did get quite tanned, ignoring the damage that occurred in the process. We spent all day on the beach. Lovely memories and now dry wrinkled skin!   Posted: 02/13/2025 15:47:49
Very nice capture. I especially like the fact that you have chosen 2 ladies strolling on the beach with their surf equipment. We have just returned from a surfing area in Costa Rica and I dare say that 90% of the surfers were male. I shot many frames trying to get a good image of surfers. Maybe I should have looked more on the beach.
Great story and good job capturing it well.   Posted: 02/15/2025 14:30:12

A cheeky shot for sure - I like the line leading to the people in the background.   Posted: 02/21/2025 08:35:56
