July 2025 - Asam Bazaar
About the Image(s)
A year ago I visited Nepal to trek the Annapurna Circuit (yes on my own) and spent some time in Asan Bazar, the central 'shopping precinct' in the heart of Kathmandu. I visited 4 times at different times of the day to capture the atmosphere, the people, the smells and more. This scene is taken of one of the vendors, huddled under a staircase that is damaged and fragile (following a major earthquake).
Never did I feel unsafe. And yes, I have many images of this market place.

Jen: Great image - makes me want to visit the Asam Bazaar!   Posted: 07/04/2025 06:48:47
Hi Jen. A busy photo showing the complex (or ramshackle) nature in a small space of a typical Asian market shop/stall. The lady seated I presume the shop owner is barely noticeable, the customer is strongly shown due to her colourful dress. The lack of expression on the shop owners' part is this a detraction from the image? I to have a similar photo entered in a "Street Photography" competition and was criticised by the judge for this fact. Perhaps I could submit this photo down the track as to me this is photographic manipulation of subjects by just continually snapping the camera until they look at you.   Posted: 07/04/2025 20:41:46

Well done, Jen.
In similar situations I either wait for shopkeeper and the customer to interact or I myself engage the shopkeeper in conversation as in my opinion that adds more interest to the image.   Posted: 07/05/2025 02:17:15

Hi Jen. I like the atmosphere of a market known as bazaar here. The hustle and bustle of the market environment and lots of activities makes the image lively. But facial expressions enhances that. If the shopkeeper would have interacted at that moment, It would have been more interesting.   Posted: 07/06/2025 10:18:19
Had the shopkeeper been looking into the camera, the image "might" have been more interesting. Then again, it might not have. In the image we have, I find myself staring at the shopkeeper and wondering, "What is she thinking? What is she feeling?" The ambiguity of her expression creates some mystery that makes me stare some more. I like the image. Would I have liked another one "snapped" a moment later? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

I like the gritty nature of the shop. The keeper is actively engaging, perhaps loading a shopping bag. The colors and place are most interesting to me. Only would have knocked down the bright white bag so it would blend in better. Nice shot.   Posted: 07/08/2025 01:37:23
Nice framing of the image with the stairs on the left and the pillars on the right. Definitely a busy scene, my eye is first drawn to the lady in red.   Posted: 07/10/2025 08:27:08
Nice image of the market place. I like the detail of all the items for sale and the vendor who looks like she is listening to the lady visiting. What also catches my eye are the bricks on the left side and their lack of mortar and the random boards holding the handrail to the stairs. I think additional details like this adds to the interest of the people involved in the image.   Posted: 07/14/2025 12:10:32
