July 2025 - No Kings and Pride

About the Image(s)
Hi Everyone - I'm excited to join your group. I've been photographing nature for a couple of years, but photojournalism is new to me and I am hoping to learn about it. My first attempt at photojournalism was on June 14, 2025, at Boston's "No Kings and Pride" event. That's where I took this photograph. It was a drizzly day, but the rain did not dampen spirits.
I took the photograph with my Sony Alpha 1, Mark II, and an 85 mm prime lens. The camera settings were: 1/500 s, f / 8.0, ISO 2000.

Well done Richard, I love these scenes and those events you can find often very good moments to freeze with the camera. The photo looks like a film camera shot, well edited. I do a lot of these 16/9 ratios on demo photos, just great work.   Posted: 07/02/2025 09:41:31
Freezing the action is efficiently done in spite of the drizzle . I saw the original image, but cropping makes the faces more distinct. The faces of the protestors are important. The image is perfectly balanced. Liked it.   Posted: 07/03/2025 10:13:15
Hi Richard. I like the photo you have submitted it is on a topic that western societies are starting to change attitudes towards. Your photo can only help to push tolerance towards the favourable. Faces are striking, you have positioned yourself right at the front of the group and to add further impact I have counted 9 faces all showing different facial expressions displaying emotion, this gives a genuine feel to what these people are trying to get across and you have captured this element.   Posted: 07/04/2025 20:26:13
Hi Richard, welcome to our friendly group. For a first image all I can say is WOW - this is a powerful image that tells a great story, both about the march, but with a focus on the woman in the front. The fact that the main subject is not looking at the camera is irrelevant (in general its either direct at the camera or obvious that the person is looking away), since there is enough interest in the faces of the other protesters. I see strong emotion from the crowd which is also a good thing, and a way to make your protest image stronger. I deliberately added your original, as it also shows that you have carefully chosen to crop and fill the frame, bringing us closer to the story without empty space at the top and the bottom. I do believe that this would be an image worthy of entry into a PJ competition, both PJ-general AND PJ-Human Interest.
It's also good to see that you are not afraid to push the ISO to get a suitable shutter speed that matches the movement of the crowd.
Well done.   Posted: 07/07/2025 01:01:29

Great catch. I was out there that day too and the emotions were running high. Your crop, and focus are perfect and having the one subject drawing us in is good street photography (IMO).   Posted: 07/08/2025 01:49:42

Welcome to the group Richard! Agreed with everyone this is a powerful first image - great isolation of the first person with the backdrop of the sign.   Posted: 07/10/2025 08:22:05
Great human interest story. I love all the different expressions and being able to read the signage of the protestors. The image is sharp and clear and cropped nicely. Job well done.   Posted: 07/14/2025 12:40:34
