July 2025 - Setting up for the parade
About the Image(s)
I chose this image for the sayings on the two ladies T-Shirts. They were trying to find a spot to watch the Gay Pride parade recently held in our community.
Canon EOS R5, f/9, 1/250 sec, ISO 320 at 70mm.

Hi Tom - Nice moment to capture with lots of interesting things going on. I played with an alternate crop. Not suggesting this is an improvement over the original - I just wanted to see how the image looked with the "focus" on the two women with the T-shirts.   Posted: 07/04/2025 06:29:17

Richard, First welcome to the group. Next the crop you presented is what I had originally done with this image. My expansion if the original crop I had was to try and show more of the environment around the two main subjects. I thought the lady sitting on the right side helped to show the gay movement with her colorful dress and glasses. On the left side the lady in the white T-shirt was imprinted with "Big & Small Let's Save Them All" added to the theme as well as the person in the background with the shirt representing the gay movement. I guess it is just a matter of the viewer's perspective in seeing this image.   Posted: 07/06/2025 11:39:06
You both raise interesting perspectives on the same image. My view was to remove the woman on the right (for two reasons, the first is that she is looking out of the frame, and the second was that her sitting position was not particularly flattering), and then leave the rest of the image to tell more of the story. I did think that a little more head room for the back people might have been valuable as well, but I did think that more of the story is good.
However, looking at Richards crop, I feel this is also a strong image for a HI specific image, as we now focus directly on the two main subjects, I'm not bothered by the head cut off, and there is no doubt who the main subjects are. The engagement between the two is also nice.
Parades and events like this are great for practicing street photography as the people are happy to have their images taken, and it's colorful and fun.   Posted: 07/07/2025 00:09:56

Hi Tom. A great photo capturing the unique T-Shirt graphic. Richards suggested crop is spot on, the T-Shirt is somewhat lost in original and I did not notice until a more comprehensive look. My first impression, this is a photo of your typical sausage sizzle, I picked up on the two yellow mustard bottles first.   Posted: 07/04/2025 20:55:21

Hi Tom. A busy street scene with a lots of overlapping characters. I like Richard's crop with a highlight to the most interesting characters in the frame. The lady with the bottle in hand catches most attention.   Posted: 07/06/2025 09:44:50

Agree that it is a matter of the viewer's perspective. Got your point .   Posted: 07/06/2025 13:05:11
Yes, I agree Arunima, at the end of the day it's the photographer that gets to choose their favourites.   Posted: 07/07/2025 00:12:57
I believe that the "right" crop is the one the photographer selects. It's fascinating that so many versions can be made from one original, each with their own merits.   Posted: 07/06/2025 20:55:01
Personally, I liked the tight crop version with only the 2 featured...but my preference always goes to the intimate rather than crowd scenes.   Posted: 07/08/2025 01:30:03
