No Kings Protester by Richard Goldenberg

January 2026 - No Kings Protester

About the Image(s)

I took this photo on June 14, 2025, at a No Kings protest in Boston. The subject looked at me for a moment as he walked along the parade route.

I took the photo with my Sony Alpha 1 and an 85 mm prime lens. The settings were 1/500, f/5.6 and ISO 2500.

Hi Richard. Another photo of alternative culture people which makes for great viewing within the group and elsewhere. Subject looks threatening as though don't photograph me almost scowling at you. With the sign SOULCYCLE in the background this makes for a great combination with this man, the sign could have been in focus perhaps f16 setting. I realise though we can't plan everything in a photo. Perhaps this man has been on this inner voyage searching for soul.   Posted: 01/08/2026 20:36:16

This looks like a pride march with all the rainbow bags, and the rainbow on the man's face. There are no political signs in sight. Not like any "no kings" march I went to where signs were carried by almost everyone.
He does seem to be unhappy you are taking his picture...too bad, he's in a public space and fair game.   Posted: 01/10/2026 10:18:52

Hi Richard, I just love yor image this month and it's such a winner for me (yes I would give this very high marks if I were a judge). While I don't see this as a 'NO KINGS' march, it doesn't matter that I interpret this as a gay pride march. What a character, complete with his palestine scarf, rainbow bag and black fingernails. He stands out front and centre, the environment around him supports the story and I don't have any problems with and choices or settings you have made. I do love his expression, its not angry or threatening, it just seems to be HIM! I'll bet he would love a copy of this one. Well done, I can see how far you have come in your PJ journey.   Posted: 01/12/2026 23:21:27

Thanks all! I should have made clear that Boston's march last June was a combined "No Kings" and "Pride" march. Participants marched along the route in groups. Some groups were fully "No Kings." Others were fully "Pride." And others were mixed. I no longer recall the exact details but suspect that less than a minute later, this same spot would have been full of "No Kings" signs.   Posted: 01/13/2026 05:09:26

Richard, Your second explanation really helps identify what is happening. I saw this as a more "Gay Pride" picture than a "No Kings" protest when first viewing. Still the character you highlighted and made your focal point in your image tells a strong story. As the others have indicated the dress and facial expression says it all.   Posted: 01/13/2026 09:36:40
