Mime with soccer ball by Tom Brott

February 2026 - Mime with soccer ball

About the Image(s)

This image was taken at EPCOT several years ago. As usual there was a crowd around the mime photographing making a better image impossible to get. Shutter speed was a bit slow for the situation but I kind of like it as it shows the motion of the ball.

Canon 7D, f/5.6, 1/160sec, Iso 400, 70-200 lens @ 130mm, handheld.

Hi Tom - Nice photo and I don't mind the soft focus on the ball. I do find myself wondering about what's going on here. e.g., what's the significance of the hoop/net that the mime is holding? Was the ball thrown to "make a basket" in that hoop or was something else going on entirely? The mime has a wonderful expression and he's clearly engaged in something - just wondering about what he is engaged in.   Posted: 02/02/2026 12:25:43

Great facial expression and colorful outfit. He looks like he is about to get smacked in the face with the soccer ball. A bit wider view might have given us a better feel for what is going on. However, I understand you were trying to crop out a lot of background stuff, and that makes it tricky.   Posted: 02/03/2026 15:28:09

Hi Tom, really appreciate the intensity here. That 'chin down, eyes up' posture perfectly captures the internal state of the play. I love the ambiguity in the expression-is it hesitation, or confidence? Either way, the tight framing keeps the energy high. A slightly cleaner background would really be the icing on the cake to help isolate that focus. Thanks for sharing this moment.   Posted: 02/04/2026 10:08:35
