About the Image(s)
I took this photo on March 28, 2026, in Boston at the No Kings protest with my Sony Alpha 1 and a 100 mm prime lens. The 100 mm was not feeling like the right lens choice for this large dense crowd, but I set myself the goal of capturing one face of interest while also showing the crowd. The settings were 1/500 s, f/16, and ISO of 1000. Looking at those settings, I'm surprised by the f/16, I think my thumb must have slipped on the wheel.

Seems many of us were focused on the No Kings event. So glad it was well attended. You really had a good turnout in Boston. The mob sort of frames your subject. Good colors. Looks cold there.   Posted: 04/06/2026 13:57:16
HI Richard, I really like how you have captured an interesting person in the middle of a big crowd, this is what makes this a good image for HI, since the focus is on a person, in an interesting situation. What's missing for me is the reason for the big crowd (the signage, the emotions of anger, passion, raised fists). From your dialogue above, you have successed in what you intended - to focus on one face of interest as well as showing the crowd - and what a huge crowd it is. I was also a little surprised by the f16 (I make that mistake too), but in this instance it may be the best option since the crowd is reasonably discernable without being distracting. Well done for getting in with a good plan.   Posted: 04/09/2026 04:27:29
Richard, I too find this image a little hard to find what is happening with out your description. It could be a political rally, concert, or any other type of large gathering. I think the saving grace for this image is the focus on the people in the foreground and their expressions with the strong indication it is cold. You nicely captured the mass of humanity with the far reaching people to the monument and the background trees. The array of colors of hats and jackets help to show the very large group as a hole. Camera settings appear to be good for this situation.   Posted: 04/10/2026 13:43:50
Hi Richard, I like your approach of highlighting a single face of interest while still conveying the scale of the crowd. There's a strong sense of density and depth that really pulls the eye inward. I do find myself echoing a bit of what others mentioned: without your description, the specific context of the event isn't immediately clear. I just notice the US flag on the left. That said, your original goal of capturing one compelling face within the mass definitely comes through, and it makes for an engaging image.
By the way, would you also consider a slightly tighter crop?   Posted: 04/18/2026 08:01:51
