This image was taken in a famous laneway in Melbourne (Hosier Lane) that is filled with graffiti, street art, posters, private protests and a lot of tourists.
I’ve added this one to highlight the nature of street art, and to start a discussion about how we can ‘value add’ to street art images to tell a photojournalism story.

You caught the walkers in the perfect position...like they are being held by the basketball player. If they had gotten in front of the ball, it wouldn't have been as good. Colors good, action good, cropping good. Nothing not to like about this one. Posted: 07/05/2026 10:53:24

Thanks Richard. yes, just photographing street art is a tricky subject for PJ, so adding a human element to tell as story (about the human) is important. I feel that this one is not as strong as others I have, given that there is little connection between the art and the women, other than they are looking at it. For example: teens wearing basketball jerseys might give a better connection. Posted: 07/19/2026 01:50:07
Hi Jen. Your photo captures street art very succinctly. One lady is looking at the art or her head is placed in the direction of the image. You have also aligned the image head dirctly above the two walking ladies. How to add to street art is contravesial, in many countries people just tag buildings and locations with black paint cans and a suburb in Melbourne that I travel accross Preston is rife with art vandalism to public and private buildings. When I was in Japan no street art or tagging anywhere and the cleanest country I have visited. Unfortunately street art has been tainted by street art vandalism. Next time I am in Preston or even on Eastlink Motorway will try for a photo of street art vandalism. Posted: 07/18/2026 06:35:51
I absolutely agree, a lot of true street art is now lost amongst the tagging, vanalism and rubbish. I can't ride the train to Melbourne without seeing this all the way. The key is to look for some sort of connection between the art and the people or some form of human story that is reflected in the art. A lot of entrants feel that the art itself is enough, since it's bold and created by humans, however this would just be a picture of someone else's art work and as such would score low. Jennifer, Another wonderful image that is well exposed and well timed with the girls walking and the colorful to the colorful basketball standing out from the player. The image to me includes everyday life with both girls having a drink and straw in a plastic container and one holding her cell phone. Shutter could have been a bit faster as one foot is blurred.
As for street art there is one section in Miami that allows and encourages the street art and graffiti on the walls and buildings in that area, that I am going to have to revisit sometime soon. Posted: 07/18/2026 16:00:01

Good point about the blurred foot. This particular lane is quite dark even on a bright sunny day, so I find I have to find a balance between ISO and shutter. Posted: 07/19/2026 01:54:35
