Italian Day on the Drive is Vancouver’s vibrant, multi-block street festival that transforms Commercial Drive into a lively celebration of Italian culture, heritage, and community spirit. Drawing over 100,000 attendees annually, the festival fills the neighbourhood with authentic food, live music, street performers, and etc. In the middle of a crowded street, an interesting moment caught my attention. I saw the massive police ATV and the vivid Italian flag draped over a festival-goer's shoulders with a hand gesture. Two gentlemen paused and chatted. But their exact conversation remains a mystery!

Hi Christine - I like the contrast here between the very imposing Police ATV and the pedestrian. I wouldn't have known that this was "Italian Day" as opposed to some other event, but am not sure that's important. Interesting interaction between the two. Sort of wish we had more of an idea about what type of interaction it was. Friendly or aggressive? If It were my shot I'd crop off much of the top to focus on the people. Posted: 07/05/2026 11:06:57
I really like the story behind this image - is the man being told off by the police officer, is it a conversation of good will? Without knowing the circumstances this adds a little mystery that allows the viewer to make up the story. Nice capture, nicely framed. I do think the depth of field is too sharp, and the background is competing with the story in the front, especially the man with the flag. A wider aperture (esp at 35mm) might have been indicated.
I did find the image a little over exposed and just dropped the highlights a bit (with a small crop at the top to remove the bright sky). easy adjustments that brings out the color a bit more.

Hi Christine. A striking photo on first impression, an overwhelming police vehicle starring the viewer right in the face with a serious looking police officer. Is the person carrying the flag being spoken to and being warned about appropriate behaviour? A very good capture making the viewer ask questions about the scene. Posted: 07/13/2026 05:51:33
Christine, Wonderful image of what looks like a street festival of some sort. After reading your description it is fairly easy to see the street booths/vendors and a man in an Italia shirt. As presented it would appear to be a more friendly conversation between the two as the officers lights are not on and the officer behind him does not appear to be in a hurry. I do agree with Jen that possibly a wider aperture would have helped set the two away from the crown. Her cropping suggestion also has merit. Posted: 07/18/2026 19:19:59
