Jobless by Tom Brott

About the Image(s)

This image was shot several years ago on an excursion while stopped in Belize. We were going on a river cruise/expedition when this boat came toward our boat. I thought the boat's name and driver were interesting. Where was he off to so fast as it is a very laid back country?

Adjusted several sliders and cropped a lot of water off the front of the image to bring the boat in closer.
Canon 7D Mark 2, f/10, 1/2000 sec, ISO 800, 400mm, handheld.

Hi Tom. I like this photo a great deal, I have also in Asia taken many similar. The name on the boat, JOBLESS sets it apart from other man/woman in a boat photo. Photo stimulates many thoughts for the viewer, why is he jobless, is going fishing to catch some survival food. Man is also looking directly at you, driving his perhaps difficult life at you to be noticed.   Posted: 09/04/2026 20:03:49

A sad photo really. Perhaps he is employed now but still has his boat name unchanged. I like the boat's motion, colors and wake spray. The background pink roofs are unfortunate, but perhaps could be darkened just a bit, or cropped down a little?   Posted: 09/04/2026 21:20:55

A great subject for a HI or general PJ image that asks more questions that it can answer. Why call a boat jobless? I like how you have positioned the man in the middle and included the spray at the back to add to the story. Its good that there is enough of the cityscape in the background that supports the culture of the gentleman. You might want to be a little careful about the selective brightness you have applied to the man, as this has extended beyond the top his head.   Posted: 09/12/2026 00:20:51
