I went to a parade "Pride Day" in Vancouver in August. There are crowds and lots of teams. As I usually prefer, capturing someone or something quiet yet narrative is where my interest lies. Eventually, one person caught my eye. I chose to shoot with a telephoto lens to isolate his expression and gesture—the raised rainbow fan—while keeping the surrounding marchers visible as a soft, readable backdrop. To achieve this under the shaded street lighting, I set my camera to ISO 1000, giving me the flexibility to use a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the dynamic movement without sacrificing sharp focus or image clarity. Did I get the personal, authentic emotion of the individual and the collective energy of the event surrounding them?

Hi Christine, I do believe you have achieved your intent - that is to make the central man stand out from the less sharp participants behind. The question for me now becomes, 'do you want to tell a story about the event or about the main subject'? Your dialogue suggests that you want more focus on the man without losing the energy. Given that the majority of the participants are wearing white singlets I believe that he would be more isolated by creating a shallower depth of field or to crop in more so that he fills the frame better. I have no problems identifying the event but I would like to see his fan sidewards so that the rainbow colors were more obvious. I've done a crop to give you something to compare with.
As usual, your image is sharp, your settings good and the story is strong, for both general PJ and PJ-HI.   Posted: 10/14/2026 03:57:20

Hi Christine. I do think once again Jen is about right regarding the people in the photo and yes the fan should have been a stronger aspect of the photo bust mode is the way to go to capture these finer points in a photo. Only issue is you then create a lot of work for yourself sifting through bust photos to find the right one.   Posted: 10/14/2026 05:07:15

At first I thought it was a sporting event with everyone dressed the same. Pride march wouldn't have been what I thought I was witnessing. Your settings are right on. However, I agree a closer crop would have focused the attention on the participant you wanted to feature, especially because he is the only one with a hint of why they were there.   Posted: 10/14/2026 11:16:11
