About the Image(s)

Nikon Z6ii, 24-120 mm lens, f 4, 1/500 sec, ISO 450 mm

The images explore the concept of jumpology. Does jumping reveal the character of people. Does it create a more interesting image?

The image was captured July 6, 2024, London, Victoria Park Music Fest. The lead singer jumped off the stage onto the road, and a bystander rushed in to photograph him. Timing images of the "jump" is challenging, when more than one person is involved. Which image do you consider is more interesting and tells the stronger story. In image 3, I did not have more space on the capture.

Refer to the link below which discusses Halsman and Jumpology as a technique to reveal the true character of people.

I have a much stronger response to the second image. The facial expressions that can be seen on three of the figures are more engaging and somehow make me feel that this is a participatory event rather than trying to figure out what the guy with the mike is doing. In the original shot, it looks like the woman with the camera is looking past him and makes me wonder if something is going on behind him.
I think it is an interesting photo, although I never would have guessed the topic was something called "Jumpology"!   Posted: 11/06/2024 09:05:38

For me, image two is better than image one. In image one, the pole comes out of the woman's hair and she is looking past the man, so there is no interaction between them.

Between image 2 and 3, which do you prefer and why. What makes one image "more interesting" or have more "emotional impact" as perceived by the viewer?

Judith I think Original 2 is the right frame where everybody is engaged with the jumper with the microphone and you can see their faces (however not primordial). The two girls in the background just in front of the photographer seems to be kissing which gives another factor of interest to the image.   Posted: 11/07/2024 09:26:37

I like seeing the man with the microphone jumping in the air in image original 2. I also like that you can see their faces. I also enjoy how the audience seems to be completely involved. Karen Kohn   Posted: 11/07/2024 17:02:23

Hi Judith, This is a kinetic scene, but to the observer who wasn't there, it may really be two scenes. The people jumping in front of an attentive crowd is the most active image. The girl with the camera does not seem to be looking at or pointing the camera at anything we can see. She's out of place. I do like the No Perking sign in contrast to the people jumping. The utility pole is less in focus and not a big problem. As a result, I join other commentators in preferring original 2 because the camera girl is well engaged with the jump group. The time sequence of capture is, main image (1); then original (2); and the oiginal 2 (3).

This sequence taught me to learn how to anticipate the action and then keep following it (much like a tennis player watching the ball and then swinging through). Take the person with the camera out of the scene (object removal), and the story changes.

The PSA PJ definition states that "When Human Interest is specified, those images depict a person in an interactive, emotional or unusual situation, excluding sports action." What makes Original 2 the strongest is that all four people are interacting.

With respect to image evaluation, image original 2 has a stronger composition (framing), and story element (jumping). The reference to jumping was to encourage people to understand that in motion and action, people let down their guard and the true self emerges.   Posted: 11/08/2024 13:00:53
