At The Bedside by Karel Werner

March 2026 - At The Bedside

About the Image(s)

This photograph was taken during my visit to a hospice in Čerčany, Czech Republic. The nurses were preparing a patient for washing and brought towels and a pillow to make the process more comfortable while caring for her in bed. The whole moment unfolded very quietly and with great care.
I took several images during this moment, but I selected this one because of its simple composition and the gestures of the hands, which for me best express the atmosphere of care and quiet respect toward the patient. I intentionally kept a larger part of the bed and blanket in the frame, as it helps create a calm and intimate scene.
The photograph was converted to black and white to emphasize light, textures, and the relationship between the caregivers and the patient.

Karel, the hands and location says it all. We do not need to see the face or faces of the helpers to understand the intensity of this image. In fact for HIPPA regulations, we should not see the face of the patient. The B&W interpretation adds some more drama to it.   Posted: 03/09/2026 09:08:12

I fully agree with Isaac. Mono conversion maintaining low contrast suits the mood of an image. Overall good image

For me, this is a lovely image and accomplishes everything you wanted to convey, with your choice of cropping and composition.   Posted: 03/11/2026 09:21:51
