Cotton Eye Joe in Reykjavik by Ardeth Carlson

April 2026 - Cotton Eye Joe in Reykjavik

About the Image(s)

I took this photo of two street musicians on the street in downtown Reykjavik. They were playing an American folk classic, "Cotton Eye Joe"! Although the viewer can't hear that interesting music style in the photo, I think their dress, that beard, and those interesting instruments create impact.
Camera info: Nikon D7100, Nikon lens 18-300 @ 110 mm. Exposure 1/1600, f/5.6, ISO 400, on a sunny but chilly day.

Ardeth, indeed the combination of factors make this image very interesting. The left musician is playing a hammered dulcimer consistent of many strings stretched across the top and played by striking the strings with a small wooden mallet and commonly used in folk and traditional music across Europe and the US, and the bearded man is playing a Banjo which is also used for folk music but mainly in blue grass. Great interaction of the musicians with their instruments. Image is full of color and sharp.   Posted: 04/15/2026 15:13:36
