Reading The Koran-Tarsus Turkey by Alan Lichtenstein, QPSA

June 2026 - Reading The Koran-Tarsus Turkey

About the Image(s)

On trip to Eastern Turkey, our group visited a mosque in Tarsus. On leaving, we observed a solitary devotee in the courtyard of the mosque. He paid no attention to our group as we passed by, so engrossed was he in his study. I paused to capture this image. Although this image shows no observable background features to indicate where it was taken and the image itself may infer that it was staged, but it was not.

Hello Alan, I do think this is a strong HI image, with a solid story about faith and prayer, and conveys emotions about belief, curiosity and a deeply personal and peaceful moment for the subject. I don't see that the image is at all staged, and it would be a poor judge to consider it that way. I like the simplicity of the image, the rolled carpet, the small bookstand and the kneeling subject all convey a private moment. If I were to make any observations, I might suggest to not centre the subject since there is 'dead' space behind him, and a little more space in front of him might also add information about the location (perhaps this was not feasable but worth mentioning.). All in all a strong PJ image that I feel would do well in competition.   Posted: 06/04/2026 13:15:22

Alan, I agree completely with what Jen said and suggested. Nothing additional to add. On a "staged" image I think they would have removed the rolled carpets in the uppler left (my left" corner which are distracting, or perhaps they really serve the context.   Posted: 06/09/2026 04:02:48

Hi Alan,
What I like most about this image is its calm and contemplative atmosphere. The man appears completely absorbed in reading and prayer, creating a strong sense of devotion and concentration. It feels like a very personal moment, quietly observed and respectfully captured.

I also appreciate the simplicity of the scene. There are no distracting elements competing for attention, and the clean surroundings help keep the viewer focused on the subject and the act of worship itself. The photograph feels natural and authentic, which adds to its emotional impact.

One thing I found myself wondering about is the composition. I am curious how the image might look if the man were positioned slightly farther to the right, leaving more space in front of him in the direction he is facing. It could perhaps enhance the feeling of reflection and quietness. Of course, I do not know what options were available at the time, and sometimes capturing the genuine moment is more important than achieving a perfect composition.

Overall, I find this to be a sincere and engaging image that successfully conveys a moment of faith, concentration, and inner peace.   Posted: 06/09/2026 05:32:44

Thanks for all your comments. Most of my images are taken "on the fly," while moving. I travel virtually in groups and when the group moves, you move, and don't get time to consider the moment and all the elements of composition you might want. You capture the image as best you can. Those are the conditions under which this image was created.   Posted: 06/09/2026 05:56:09

I fully agree with Jen's analysis and suggestions. I did not find the image staged at all. The devotee appears completely engrossed in the moment, which is evident from his gesture and expression.

I also didn't find the carpets in the corner distracting. On the contrary, they add context and contribute to the story. I agree with the suggestion regarding the composition, but you've already provided your clarification on that aspect.

Overall, this is a nice PJ image with a genuine and engaging moment.

I found it interesting to see you revisit and share an image from 2013.   Posted: 06/10/2026 08:37:37

I agree with all of the previous comments. I love the simplicity of the scene as you have composed it, and as someone who is especially drawn to texture, I love the stone, the wood, the carpet, the burlap, which all add to the pleasing image. There is something touching about his bare feet tucked beneath him as he concentrates on his reading. I think it's a lovely HI image.   Posted: 06/10/2026 09:12:17

Thank you for your compliment, Ardeth. Sometimes you get lucky with such a capture. Now, only if everyone here can tell the judges....<G>   Posted: 06/10/2026 09:34:33
