June 2026 - Salt Mine Worker
About the Image(s)
Although these workers are given shoes, many still choose to work barefoot. What drew my attention was the condition of their feet after long hours in the salt mines, which became the main subject of this image. To focus on that, I kept the worker largely in shadow. I'm not entirely happy with the composition, but I felt the photograph was still worth sharing.

I'm not entirely happy with the composition, either. Focusing on the worker's feet one would expect them to be caked with salt, but the salt doesn't appear to have any other effect on the worker's feet that obvious for this image, as the salt can easily be washed off. IMV, had you captured the entire image of the worker, it could have had HI interest with whatever story you used as your description, but this image doesn't do much for me. As an image, although you don't give your settings, it appears to be well-captured and in focus. The footprints do capture the worker working in the salt pits, but still, the image isn't interesting, as you captured it and described it.   Posted: 06/05/2026 13:48:30
Its not only salt on his feet. See the colour of the feet. The skin is affected because of being in salt for hours   Posted: 06/06/2026 11:27:04
Vinaya, your intention is good, but not everybody else will see what you saw. Alan is right with respect of not showing the whole picture of the worker and his "home made" tool. Yes, the long exposure of the skin to the salt created damage, but the fact that as a rule, everybody has a white sole on their feet does not help to imply that there is damage on the skin.   Posted: 06/09/2026 04:08:02
I agree with your comment, Isaac. The comments from you all indicates that what I observed or what I chose as point of interest is not so prominent.   Posted: 06/10/2026 04:11:16
Hi Vinaya,
I like this image mainly because of its simplicity. If I had not read the accompanying description, it would not bother me at all that I cannot see the entire worker. What immediately caught my attention was the combination of the bare feet, the footprints in the salt, and the shadow. The relationship between these elements is what makes the photograph interesting to me.
After reading the description, I understand the photographer's intention much better. In that case, I agree with the previous comments that if the main subject was the condition of the worker's feet after long hours in the salt fields, then a closer and more detailed view of the feet might have made the message even stronger. As a photograph on its own, however, I think it works well in its current form, and personally I do not feel the need to see the entire worker. What I enjoy most is the use of the shadow and the footprints, which add another dimension to the image.   Posted: 06/09/2026 05:43:54

Thanks a lot, Karel, for bringing a different perspective to the image. I couldn't agree more with your analysis. Your observations added another dimension to the way I look at the photograph and helped me appreciate aspects that I hadn't considered before. Much appreciated.   Posted: 06/10/2026 04:35:00
Vinaya, I agree with Karel's comment that the rake, the footprints, and the shadow make this interesting to me. I don't know that I would need to see the entire person, not even necessarily the face, because my curiosity about the story is focused on the work the person is doing, and I can see by the shadow that there is strong sunlight; however, I feel the choice of crop is a bit awkward and might be improved by keeping more of the upper body and arm.   Posted: 06/10/2026 09:19:56
y you Ardeth for your analysis, I will chk it   Posted: 06/11/2026 04:36:24
