July 2026 - Feeding the Pigeons

On the steps of the Quito’s Metropolitan Cathedral located on Independence Square, people sit to feed the pigeons. Here a mother with her young daughter is throwing grounded corn to the birds. They come by the hundreds.
The image was created with a Nikon D4 with the Nikkor zoom lens 28-300 mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 300 mm and these settings: ISO 800, f/8 and 1/1250 sec. The image was PP in LighRoom and cropped.

What I like most about this image is the contrast between the expressions of the mother and her daughter. The mother appears joyful and relaxed, while the little girl is completely focused on feeding the pigeons. Although they are sharing the same moment, each of them is experiencing it in a different way, and I think that adds a natural and authentic feeling to the photograph.
I also like how the large number of pigeons creates a lively atmosphere without taking attention away from the main subjects. The entire scene feels spontaneous and captures a simple yet beautiful everyday moment.

When I saw this image I was reminded of the story of 'feeding the birds" from the movie Mary Poppins, because this image tells that story exactly, and it gets high marks for its story-telling aspect. Nice sharp photo. good to use 1/1250 shutter speed to freeze the grains. Mother's expression is good, as if she is doing this to give happiness to the daughter. Coloured dress of a girl captured the attention
