Welcome to the group Grisell. There are a number of open air markets in Paris, but I missed this one. Markets always generate good images for PJD in general, and this image would qualify in that category, but HI needs a bit more. There needs to be a strong emotional attachment to the image, such as great joy, pity, despondency, solitude, etc. As far as the image, it seems your center of attraction is the monument rather than the market. The image appears to be somewhat overexposed in the background, one of the big drawbacks of using a phone, as you can't control the technicals easily to confront differing areas of exposure. Your bio indicates you've moved throughout the world, and no doubt you have a lot of images from those experiences. If you haven't considered it, I would also suggest you join one of the Travel Division study groups, as you undoubtedly have many, many, images that would do well in that group.   Posted: 10/01/2026 05:46:47
Hello Alan, Thank you so much for the welcome, you are absolutely right about your comment, after I sent it I thought about it all day, I wanted to delete it and sent another but it was to late... I will pay more attention to "the emotion, reaction" of each of my future entries. Thank you for the suggestion about travel group, good idea. Now is time to view and comment in the other October entries! thanks again, specially about using the phone, and drawback from it. I am looking at purchasing one but so far haven't had the opportunity to do enough research.   Posted: 10/01/2026 13:37:39
Grisell, thank you for your reply. IMV, the technical aspects that I commented on are more important with regard to this image, as opposed to whether or not its more suitable for PJD general or PJD-HI, although going forward, do pay more attention to the emotional impact of the image you submit. And do join a PTD study group because based on your biography, you'll likely have tons of images suitable for that.   Posted: 10/01/2026 14:01:23
Thank you Alan, I just sent the email to the group administrator... hopefully he/she will get back to me soon, I'll let you know if I get accepted (I hope)   Posted: 10/01/2026 15:06:47
No need to let me know. You'll get accepted. Membership in a study group is a membership benefit you get, and you don't need to worry about getting accepted; it's a right. So, good luck.   Posted: 10/01/2026 15:31:32
Grisel welcome to our group, and yes; Alan is right, so I am not going to repeat what he said. Looking forward to see your work.   Posted: 10/05/2026 11:53:30

In addition to conveying an emotion in both HI and General photojournalism images, I think even more important is storytelling, and an effective story generally will reflect an emotion of some kind, whether tenderness, joy, anger, quiet reflection, even the juxtaposition of elements whin the image that creates interest. I understand submitting a photo to the group and then wishing I had submitted something else, but I would just say that I have difficulty finding the main focus in the image and a story is not clear, since the faces and expressions of most of the people are not visible. I agree with Alan that technically it would be more effective to have stronger color and contrast in the photo and a main feature that captures our attention.   Posted: 10/05/2026 18:29:38
Thank you very much for your reply, covering all points, I really appreciate it... I definitely pay attention to everything you said...   Posted: 10/05/2026 20:06:26
I liked the composition. It is different and quite effective. The triangular composition gives good depth to the image and creates a three-dimensional effect. Including the monument in the background also gives a clear identity to the location. The clouds in the sky add to the beauty of the image as well.
Yes, I agree that underexposing the background is very much needed. In addition, I felt that including less sky and giving more space to the people would have added more meaning and impact to the image.   Posted: 10/07/2026 03:18:43

Thank you Vinaya, even though it did not fit the PJ description I really appreciate your taking the time to critique the image, I do have another one I will compare it to this one and make the changes you suggested, it is hard to underexpose when you are working with the phone or maybe I need to find out how to addresss the exposure in the phone, thanks again!   Posted: 10/07/2026 16:56:36
