A Moment of Tradition by Karel Werner

October 2026 - A Moment of Tradition

About the Image(s)

This photograph was taken earlier this year during a Masopust parade in the Czech Republic. Masopust is a traditional pre-Lenten celebration, usually held in the weeks before Ash Wednesday, with costumes, masks, music, food, and processions through towns and villages.
What caught my attention here was the brief moment between the little girl and her father. They seemed to be discussing something together in the middle of all the activity around them, and I liked the contrast between this quiet interaction and the busy atmosphere of the parade.
The image has also received several acceptances in FIAP exhibitions.

I agree with your interpretation. That gives the high emotional attachment that qualifies this image as HI. I do also feel that your conversion to monochrome adds to the HI impact.   Posted: 10/01/2026 05:34:33

Karel, great image. Beautiful interaction between father and daughter with nice face language looking at each other. The image is sharp, and the background is part of the environment. The B & W interpretation adds character to it.   Posted: 10/05/2026 11:32:09

Hello K, love the feeling of the two of them!!!, I personally would had loved to see it in color as the traditional (I am guessing) dress and hat of the girl would had been a wonderful colorful eye-catcher... but then the white, light sheet looking piece of fabric the father is wearing maybe that would had been a bit too bright (?) congrats you really pictured the best of what was happening in that street   Posted: 10/05/2026 15:10:14

Hi Grisell,
thank you, I'm glad the moment between them works for you. The color version does exist, of course, and you are right that the girl's clothing is more noticeable there.
In the end, though, I chose black and white because I wanted the attention to stay mainly on their expressions, their hands and the interaction between them, without the surrounding colors of the parade competing too much with the main moment.
And yes, the father's light-colored clothing would probably attract even more attention in color. That is another reason why I felt the black-and-white version worked better for this particular image.
Thank you for your kind comment.   Posted: 10/16/2026 14:46:48

I love the interaction between the father and daughter. Just for me personally, I feel that a color image would separate them from the background more effectively, as the little girl's hat and dress merge a bit into the background. It is a lovely image, though, and congratulations on the FIAP acceptances.   Posted: 10/05/2026 17:58:43
