Wind, Sea, Rock and Light by Cynthia Whelan

May 2021 - Wind, Sea, Rock and Light

About the Image(s)

Point Arena Light Station, California
Built on the San Andreas Fault in 1870, it crumbled in the famous 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The large Frensel lens that warned ships at sea, shattered. The lighthouse was rebuilt in 1908, and the lens is now on display in the Visitor Center. Today the light is gone, but the wind, the sea, and the rock remain.
I photographed this with my Olympus OMD EM5 Mark II in the middle of the day. I wanted to show the lighthouse and it’s relationship with the environment.

A lovely lighthouse image. I photograph lighthouses a lot and I most often try to include the environmental surrounds to give perspective and impact to the lighthouse. Nicely done!

Nice, simple image; I like the rocks leading up to the lighthouse, and the clear sky behind it. It might be nice with clouds, too, but fine as it is in my opinion.   Posted: 05/16/2021 17:06:39

Lovely image! I think by adding little bit more contrast will give better punch to the image. Else everything seems perfect to me.   Posted: 05/18/2021 11:36:03

I agree with Gary`s comments - and I too have great fun photographing lighthouses. Those cliffs look awesome.   Posted: 05/25/2021 16:30:31

Beautiful shot... echoing the other comments, it could use a bit more contrast, the lighting is just a bit flat.   Posted: 05/25/2021 18:32:24

Nice job in selecting where you shot from! Really like the rocky shoreline you selected to include. Agree with Lisa - you might to want to add a some contrast to make things pop a bit. You might also want to try this shot again at sunset to get a more interesting sky.   Posted: 05/26/2021 14:59:12
