New York City at Las Vegas. by Laurie Friedman, QPSA

May 2021 - New York City at Las Vegas.

About the Image(s)

A couple of photo friends and I were driving to the Albuquerque PSA Conference from Sacramento, and passed through Las Vegas for a couple of days. It’s wonderful for photography, with iconic structures from different countries as well as various fountains, not to mention the elaborate casinos—and good food! I think this is a strong travel image of New York icons, but it hasn’t done well in competitions—possibly because international judges don’t recognize it and don’t understand what’s happening? Your thoughts welcome.
I don’t know the exact photo details, but I use a Canon 7D for my travels, and have a Tamron 16-300mm lens to just bring one main lens.

Laurie, I agree it's a strong travel image.
Perhaps you can try to make the image neater by cropping little from the right as the little red structure peeping in not contributing to the image. I also feel the street light is taking up a lot of attention.   Posted: 05/13/2021 10:59:33

Thanks, Malabika. I agree with you about the small red bit on the right, and also that the streetlight is distracting. Maybe I'll try to take it again without the streetlight, should I return to Vegas.   Posted: 05/16/2021 16:47:39

Have walked past this spot on both occasions I have been to Las Vegas. So colourful and sharp - loads of impact Laurie.
As well as that small red bit - the other side also bothers me - I am so fussy about lettering on the edges of images that bleed out, I cropped a tiny bit from the left side to simply leave the word Vegas instead of as Vegas. Trivial I know - but when medals/ribbons are being decided upon???????   Posted: 05/25/2021 16:25:27

great capture... I'm in Vegas right now and just drove past that last night... have yet to get out and walk around, work gets in the way. Its a good composition, but maybe the lighting is a bit flat? not sure if you can give the buildings some more texture or contrast to spice it up? just a guess...I wish I knew how to pick a competition winner!   Posted: 05/25/2021 18:26:56

Hi Laurie, I like the inclusion of the lamp post, for me it echoes the shape of that wild red ride. Love how lady liberty stands centre will all of the maze of shapes happening around her. Great capture.   Posted: 05/26/2021 01:44:16

Very fun image! Like the centering of Lady Liberty. Have you considered removing the distortion of the back leaning building from the wide angle lens?   Posted: 05/26/2021 14:52:50
