Shibuya Crossing by Lisa Cirincione, QPSA, AFIAP

September 2022 - Shibuya Crossing

About the Image(s)

Tokyo, Japan - August 2021

This is a famous pedestrian crossing in Japan. I had seen photos and clips in movies for years. So when we went to Tokyo last summer, I wanted to go and check it out.
But because of Covid and the rain that day, it was virtually empty. I kind of like it this way better.

Lisa, indeed you are giving us an unusual view of the Shibuya Crossing. Normally it is pandemonium of people and moving vehicles day and night. Interesting vantage point. The image is sharp. For illustration purposes, I am attaching one of my images of the site at night back in 2016   Posted: 09/15/2022 06:09:35

Wow Isaac, your image is what I expected. We were on top of a building, shooting thru glass, so that's why raindrops. I had to tilt to get more of the crossing on the shot. I did appreciate that it was different without all the people and cars.   Posted: 09/22/2022 16:48:30

I think I would prefer it with the high pedestrian traffic, but the lack of pedestrian traffic is perhaps a story of itself with these very wide crosswalks clearly designed for a lot of foot traffic. It asks the question, where are all the people?   Posted: 09/15/2022 09:20:57

The Covid timeline sometimes leads to different situations. I expected the mass of people, but in August 2021, even though the Olympics were going on, it was still mostly devoid of people, especially during the rain.   Posted: 09/22/2022 16:50:03

Lisa,
Interesting image!
I would prefer to keep the buildings straight. Without the famous crowd at this spot, it looks just like a record image.
I was just imagining if the crowd shown in Isaac's image, would have been captured from this vantage point, then the image would fall in a different level!   Posted: 09/15/2022 09:31:31

Malabika, I was hoping for the crowds of people. We searched for this vantage point, but because of rain and Covid, no crowds. The angle is mainly to keep all
3 crosswalks in the shot, but I could have done a straighter shot.   Posted: 09/22/2022 16:52:23

A bold decision to show this angled viewpoint, it works for me!   Posted: 09/22/2022 15:33:32

Thank you David, I liked the Angie shot so that I could see all 3 crosswalks.   Posted: 09/22/2022 16:54:10
