Street market, Catania by David Stout, EPSA

February 2024 - Street market, Catania

About the Image(s)

A vast morning market is held in the narrow alleys around the Piazza Duomo in Catania on weekdays. To protect both people and produce from the intense sunlight a canopy of coloured umbrellas are suspended from the upper buildings, I like the added vibrance instead of plain blue sky.

The colorful umbrellas certainly add a vibrance to the morning scene at the street market. It seems like so many places are adding them these days. Nice lighting of the umbrellas though a little harder to see below.   Posted: 02/08/2024 15:57:34

I love European markets! I always want to buy things that I can't carry home. This is a difficult situation to photograph with the deep shadows below and the vibrance and light of the umbrellas above. It does display the shadowing effect of the umbrellas on the market below, although the large umbrella over the produce stand is providing the most shade. . I've seen umbrellas like this in the Caribbean but not in Europe.   Posted: 02/13/2024 13:32:01

Very colorful image with all the umbrellas. I would have liked to see more of what was selling in the market however then you do not get the umbrellas.   Posted: 02/18/2024 13:48:07

I have a photo from Spain with umbrellas overhead and as part of the subject. Do they go the entire length of the street market? I would like a clearer view of the market with its contents but the balloons are the highlights for me! A cheerful photo!   Posted: 02/20/2024 21:25:25

The colourful umbrellas are certainly the highlights of this image, although I can't imagine that those little umbrellas so high up would be contributing much to shading the shoppers and vendors in the street below.   Posted: 02/21/2024 11:36:56

I have never seen anything like this and find it very interesting. The color is great and makes the photo for me. I agree the area in shadow is a problem and for me makes it less interesting. It certainly shows a culture and makes a nice travel image.   Posted: 02/25/2024 13:26:41
