About the Image(s)

Taken near Bergen, Norway - Stave churches are old traditional wooden buildings designed by the old Norse vikings.
Often the interiors have very ornate wood carvings depicting deities, warriors etc. Because of the climate there are very - few if any windows and the exterior is regularly coated with tar like resin.

Nice image of the church with interesting history. Good detail of the church and nice composition.   Posted: 04/15/2024 10:55:18

A really nice shot of the stave church. Good sharpness, and nice sky, but the foliage around the bottom of the church, leaves me wondering what the base looks like. I know you said few windows and covered with resin, but it leaves me wondering.

We were scheduled to go to Bergen last year, but we were asked to give up our cruise for a free one later. So, Bergen will have to wait.   Posted: 04/16/2024 08:51:28

Michael, the reason for the foliage is there was only access to the church from a tiny pathway to the front porch. The surrounding land was fenced off.
ps. If you get to Bergen this church is a bus ride out of the city.   Posted: 04/17/2024 04:32:12

Very interesting and unique architecture, surrounded on three sides by dense foliage, leaving the steeple piercing the blue sky. The pagodas and carvings remind me a little of Thai and Kerala temples - in, of course, VERY different climate.   Posted: 04/22/2024 08:46:45

I too saw the similarity - I cannot believe the seafaring Vikings sailed THAT far around the globe!   Posted: 04/26/2024 04:11:04

Lovely image of the Stave Church with a nice sky and clouds in background. I'm sure you were disappointed you couldn't have got a full photo of the entire church without all the greenery on the bottom. We were on a fjord trip and stayed overnight somewhere and rented a car for a day and found a stave church that day. These churches are so lovely. I agree with Sukomar that the pagodas and carvings remind me too of Thai and Kerala temples. I'm glad you submitted a photo of part of the inside too. Very nice, David.   Posted: 04/24/2024 18:13:07

It is too bad we can't see more of the church, but the part we see is well fone and shows great detail. The nice sky is a bonus. We saw one in Norway, but I didn't get any decent photos since it was so dark. However, there is one in Door County, Wisconsin on Washington Island. I remember seeing one there and it must have been that one, but it was eons ago.   Posted: 04/25/2024 16:52:36
