Canola, Palouse by Esther Steffens

April 2024 - Canola, Palouse

About the Image(s)

And, still another from the Palouse! I realize that not many will be able to identify this photo. However, run down buildings and vehicles are part of the landscape.
I think Canola plants provide the bright background. This could be a hint to some where this is because canola has become a popular crop. It is also known as rape and oilseed rape and is related to mustard cauliflower and turnip.
Canola is a neutral cooking oil and does not add flavor to a dish.
There is some controversy about canola because plants are often sprayed with herbicides like Roundup.

Interesting image of the old car and flowers around it and the metal birds. The fields and rolling hills behind the car are nice.   Posted: 04/15/2024 11:08:12

Esther, you keep making me envious with your images of the Palouse. Your composition is very nice, and the technical aspects of the photograph are well executed. The yellow of the canola is a nice contrast to the green of the hills and the rust of the old truck. Very nicely done!   Posted: 04/16/2024 09:08:03

I really like the rusty car among the rich natural colours of the Palouse but feel my eye being drawn to the top of the frame by the bright sky. The Palouse certainly looks to be a good photographic location - it reminds me of Tuscany in Italy!   Posted: 04/18/2024 16:17:12

The image very definitely says Palouse (although I've never been there). I had the same thought of cropping off the sliver of bright sky, but I reckon you wanted the horizon line to show off the rolling hills. The brown rusted car complements the greens and yellows. Interesting how they have made it into a car graveyard, complete with neat flowers and figurines. All that's missing is a gravestone.   Posted: 04/22/2024 08:25:50

I like the suggestion from a couple people of cropping out the sky. It does take away from the rolling hills but it IS distracting. Thanks!   Posted: 04/23/2024 23:49:17

Esther, this is a beautiful image and for anyone who has been there, it is obvious it is the Palouse. Your composition with the yellow canola against the rusted vehicle is lovely and the image is sharp. Personally, without keeping the sky in, I don't think it would have the sense of place required in PT. Good job.   Posted: 04/24/2024 18:27:20

Thanks, Shirley! I am interested in your recommendation for keeping the sky in. I hadn't thought about taking it out until two or three reviewers mentioned it. I saw their point but for now will leave it as is, with the sky in.   Posted: 04/24/2024 19:39:42

Seems only Judy has not replied yet. Sorry my review is so late. Stan had open heart surgery 12 days ago so our life has been a bit hectic. He is recovering we11 (thank you, God!) but there is more work of course for me too.   Posted: 04/24/2024 19:51:33

I'm wishing Stan the best. It sounds like he is doing well. I responded somewhere else recently but don't see it. I want you to know that I am thinking about you both.

Yes, I am late, but we have had some challenges and I am finally getting to my "study groups". Yes, this is Palouse and I agree the sky should stay in so the hills show up better. I missed this car on my 2 trips there, but found others. We have seen a lot of canola in Europe in spring, but the oil is not a healthy one according to what I have read. Great shot Esther.   Posted: 04/25/2024 17:01:55

Thanks, Judy. I have read negative things about canola oil and unfortunately, it is widely used.   Posted: 04/25/2024 21:38:19
