Prague Christmas Market by Michael Smith

June 2024 - Prague Christmas Market

About the Image(s)

We were in Prague in December 2019 after a Christmas Market Cruise on the Danube. I captured the Old Town Hall at dusk, and as it was after Christmas, the market had just closed.
I had to adjust the exposure in post processing and the image was a little under exposed.

The lighting on the Old Town Hall seems good as it is; it is a bit dark you had to balance the white of the roofs. I like the composition although I might have liked to have seen a broader composition. It appears that there are some halos on most of the tops of the towers which would bother a judge. The Old Town Hall is pretty.   Posted: 06/09/2024 17:23:58

Prague is one of my favorite places so my comments may show my bias:-). I opened the shadows a bit and made the scene brighter and straightened it a bit. Towers are vertical subjects and I think it is appropriate in your image. Christmas markets are fun, but I have only been to those in Germany --5 times! I did a Christmas market trip on the Danube but it didn't include Prague--started in Munich and ended in Vienna. I hope you had a chance to see lots in Prague.   Posted: 06/16/2024 12:22:18

Thanks, Judy! I like your edit. Prague is a wonderful city. Spent three days there at the end of a Christmas Market River Cruise.

Nice image. There is a lot more to see in Prague. Not sure how much of the city has the Christmas market.   Posted: 06/17/2024 18:21:17

Rich, mostly the main square.

I like both your original and Judy's edited version. They are a slightly different look/feel. I would suggest trying this just a BIT lighter than your photo. I do like the "boldness" of the original and the sharpness of the buildings.   Posted: 06/18/2024 22:52:00

In my original, I was trying to convey the cold chilliness that was in the air as night was falling.

I have been to both Budapest and Vienna - but not Prague so I find this image interesting. Like Judy I brightened up the overall content, and used my content aware tool to get rid of the bright spots at the top of the tower.
Prague is not too far from the UK so I have just added it to my bucket list!!!   Posted: 06/21/2024 15:54:20

Prague is a wonderful city, with many interesting sights. I spent a week there at a conference, followed by another week on a tour of Bohemia. I find this image too dark, and I like Judy's and David's edits.   Posted: 06/21/2024 23:57:28
