Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao by Esther Steffens

June 2024 - Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao

About the Image(s)

I was in Spain for a month in October 2015 and one of my favorite places was Bilbao. I spent a lot of time at the Guggenheim Museum. At the time the outside was much more interesting than the inside because the exhibits were not top notch. I understand they are much better now and they do rotate.

I don’t have any camera information except that I was probably using a 70 D Canon with a telephoto lens. This photo popped up on my screen recently and I like it so I am using it for my June entry.

Esther, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao designed by the American architect Frank Gehry has a resemblance to the Stata Center part of the MIT in Cambridge MA by the same architect. You selected a side view of the building in B&W that makes the scales forming the wall stand out but misses the shades of color created by the reflection of the light depending the angle and time of the day. The cloudy sky adds interest to the image.   Posted: 06/05/2024 07:42:07

Thank you, Isaac. I neglected to give Frank Gehry credit and I do follow him and have seen a number of his buildings. My husband was at MIT 1968-71 but the Stata Center opened in 2004. I have seen pictures of it. I was married in the Saarinen Chapel at MIT, a beautiful building. MIT has some interesting architecture.
I found several photos of the Guggenheim on my iPhone and posted them on Facebook. Good memories! I do need to give Frank Gehry credit!
I may post a different view of of the Guggenheim in a future PSA session.

For some reason, I like this viewpoint of the Guggenheim and I don't know why!   Posted: 06/05/2024 23:37:16

Isaac, thank you for sending the link to your October 2022 entry. I fine all three pictures very interesting. If I am in the Boston/Cambridge area I will certainly walk around MIT.   Posted: 06/11/2024 21:06:44

This is a very unusual view of the Guggenheim, Esther. Some time we would like to go back to Spain and see some of northern Spain. Frank Gehrey's buildings are always so beautiful. The fact that you took it from the side and converted it to sepia gives it a whole different look. I like the texture of the tiles from the side but admit I like the standard view of the Guggenheim. Nice photo though.   Posted: 06/09/2024 17:14:58

I found a few photos of the Guggenheim on my phone and probably will use one as my July entry. Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 06/11/2024 21:08:13

Esther, You and I are both Gehry fans! have not been to Bilbao but have seen his Disney Concert Hall in LA, the Lou Ruvo Center in Las Vegas, the wonderful Pop Culture Museum in Seattle and an art museum in Minneapolis. We tried to get toe the Loyola Law School in LA, but it was all fenced in.
I like your view, but wish it had better light to show the variation in the tones. I think it is good to take views that we don't see all the time! We should look for different views and take parts of buildings that are sometimes more interesting than the entire structure.
The link below shows lots of Gehry's works and I wish I had known more about them when in Germany.

Judy, Thanks you for your comments and the great slideshow of Gehry's creations. I have been wanting to see the LA Concert Hall and now that my daughter moved to S. CA., I will most likely do that! I'm glad I saw and explored the building in MN. a number of years ago since my family no longer live there. I explored the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle and Marques de Riscal in Spain. I saw the Chiat/Day Complex in Venice, CA. I have pictures of the building at Bard College.
I'll probably post another photo of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao since I found some on my phone.   Posted: 06/17/2024 00:45:39

Esther, Bilbao is on my bucket list, and never having seen the Guggenheim in person, I don't have anything to compare your image to. I happen to like monochrome images and I love the texture created by the panels, and monochrome brings them out. I think it is a very interesting view and treatment of the image.   Posted: 06/18/2024 09:15:30

Thank you, Michael! I like this view despite the constructive criticism!   Posted: 06/18/2024 09:20:01

The dramatic clouds compliment the shape and texture of the Guggenheim very well Esther, an image of high impact thanks to your use of light.
Like several other group members I have not been to Bilbao but, like Michael - I will try to get there sometime!   Posted: 06/21/2024 15:34:11

I first thought this was Noah's Ark! Perhaps it was in Gehry's mind when he designed it. The lighting (extreme dark foreground), clouds and your monochrome treatment give the image an ominous feel. The river at right adds context.   Posted: 06/21/2024 23:52:24
