Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao by Esther Steffens

July 2024 - Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao

About the Image(s)

I was on a 4 week journey through Spain and Portugal with Overseas Adventure Travel in October 2015. I especially enjoyed Bilbao, mainly because of the Guggenheim Museum. It was designed by Frank Gehry who also designed Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A.and the State Center at MIT, among others. Some characterize Gehry as a DECONSTRUCTIVIST because his architecture goes against traditional structures.

iPhone 6 Plus, ISO 160, f 2.2, 29mm,

This was taken at sunset when the clouds were taking over. I know the tall building behind with all the lights is distracting, but after a while I could ignore it.

Esther, I liked your monochrome of the Guggenheim last month and I equally like this version of the exterior. The iPhone 6 did a very nice job with the low level lighting. It's amazing that the ISO setting was 160 with the low light. Yes the tall building doesn't help the image, but it is interesting just the same. If you had been able to shoot from a lower angle, you might have been able to have the museum block it out.

I assume that you didn't try to reduce the highlights to soften the two bright lights in the middle.

I do really need to go there.   Posted: 07/09/2024 12:55:09

Michael, thanks for your comments! I did not think to reduce the highlights but that is a good idea! Nor did I think about taking this from a lower angle. This why I like these constructive critiques!   Posted: 07/09/2024 14:07:03

Nice sunset image and you know I love Gehry's work. For PID, you could remove the bright building in the back. I also suggest darkening the bright bulbs.   Posted: 07/16/2024 11:31:40

A slight trim from bottom and right side got rid of some (too) bright lights. The shapes of the jetties certainly add impact to your composition, and, as previously mentioned - you could do nothing about the tower building behind the Guggenheim, and I tweaked the levels slider to brighten the overall content.   Posted: 07/16/2024 15:55:19

The odd shaped structure near the base of the frame is an artistic giant spider - there is an identical sculpture in Ottawa, Canada.   Posted: 07/16/2024 15:55:50

I like this angle of the building, Esther, and the composition taken at night which is a little unusual. David cropped out some of the distracting lights especially in the left lower side which I was going to mention. I love Gehry's work. Nice job,

The spyder, David, is done by Louise Bourgeous, and is in several museums. There is one in Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas too.   Posted: 07/17/2024 17:09:53

Nice shot of the architecture and cityscape. I'm not too bothered by the highlights, but I wish the Motorola sign was sharper. I like David's crop, although it does put the spider at the edge of the frame.   Posted: 07/22/2024 09:27:49

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. They are good ones. I loved the spider but some people who viewed this photo said they could not go near the spider!!?
