Lucerne steamer by David Stout, EPSA

May 2021 - Lucerne steamer

About the Image(s)

Wandering on the Lucerne waterfront on a sunny summer afternoon I noticed this paddle steamer about to leave harbour. Having visited this city several times while working and residing in Zurich, I knew exactly where to be as the vessel steamed by.
Canon 5D, Canon 28-135 IS lens @ 28mm, F11 @ 1/160 sec, iso 100, polariser filter fitted, all supported by my monopod.

While the Swiss flag shows location, my understanding the the Photo travel definition states that transportation methods like trains etc do not meet the standards. While this is a nice image and would go well in a travel essay (hint, hint!)it should not go on its own.   Posted: 05/09/2021 19:12:10

I don't understand... why do boats or trains not qualify as travel? This is not a shot of a boat in isolation.   Posted: 05/23/2021 15:52:55

I like the way the steeples are framed between the Swiss flag and the stern of the steamer. Nice view overall, but I wish we could see more of the coastline -- perhaps if you had a higher vantage point? I'm undecided about the reflection - not sure it enhances the image.   Posted: 05/23/2021 15:58:48

I may have over-stated my comment, but images of people on a train, a speeding train, aircraft etc. are not considered to meet the PT definition. A fully loaded train as we see in some places that hows background, would probably be OK. Except for the flag, there isn't too much background in the image to show location. There are excellent articles linked on the PSA PTD home page that are worth reading. They cover set ups that we see all the time. A copy of information sent to judges was distributed to the travel groups. Too many images that are not travel are accepted in exhibitions. My personal example is that a picture of 2 swans with no background was accepted and got an award in an exhibition I entered. It is not fair to those to at least try to follow the rules. We encourage those who see such images accepted, complain to the exhibition and to the complaint link on the PSA website.   Posted: 05/24/2021 09:29:19

Ha-Ha about the 2 swans being considered "travel"!
But in this case, there is that in-your-face flag, and there are the steeples on the left and hills on the right. So if the steamer had not been there, you'd see more hills in the background and some houses in front of them. Would that make it a travel image?   Posted: 05/25/2021 05:47:11

Great image of the steamer. I like the steeples in the background.

The whole PT definition is really getting to be a pain. I thought is was going to be modified.   Posted: 05/24/2021 13:17:08

Ha-Ha! I thought I was the only one to whom all this was Greek!
The PT definitions were modified - and this is the result.   Posted: 05/25/2021 05:50:24

Yes it is, but we should all look at catalogs to see what images get acceptances and awards in travel exhibitions and report to the exhibition and the standards director or to Nadia who is the ESD for PTD. She is working hard to get the rules to be followed.   Posted: 05/25/2021 10:36:58

Apologies for opening a can of worms, but PTD has been discussing the definition for some time due to so many obviously non-PT images being accepted. It is a complex issue and nature is working on refining their definition. I judged the PSA Intl in 2019 and one in Turkey last year and there were such things as bottles of wine, a clock, metro station, cross roads, and people standing in line. Too many think if you have traveled, you can judge travel. It doesn't help with the pros who show their travel images that are set-ups, posed etc. I get comments on my bald skies a lot, but it is not always sunny when one travels. Sadly my most "exotic" images are on slides and I may never get them scanned. There are other priorities for us now so I will have to use old images which were taken with fewer pixels. The group is a good place to get opinions.   Posted: 05/25/2021 10:34:55

A different image for you, David, and I do think it belongs in Travel. The Swiss flag, of course, shows this but also the architecture in the background. You have positioned the buildings well to show more than just the boat to make an interesting photo with a story. I love the reflections of the steamer and the flag.

Judy Burr has long been very involved with leadership roles in PSA and I know she knows more about the organization's rather strict "rules" for Travel, so the above is just my opinion.   Posted: 05/28/2021 12:04:54
