Roland in Bremen by Judy Burr, APSA, MPSA

May 2021 - Roland in Bremen

About the Image(s)

I took this on a heritage trip to Germany with the MD German Society in 2013. Many emigrants left from Bremerhaven, the port for Bremen. Since my family name is Roland, the statue had special interest for me. The statue is in the market square in front of the town hall and both have the status of World Heritage sites. The statue was erected in 1404 and is the most well-known Roland statue in Germany. Bremen is one of 3 city states in Germany and also has a statue of the Bremen Town Musicians.

I took this with an Olympus EM5 and 12-50mm lens at 44mm. ISO was 400, SS 1/500 and aperture was f 9. I am not sure this shows enough for travel, but the buildings show location.

Yes, it definitely shows enough for Photo Travel. But I'm sorry, you'll have to educate me: who is Roland? I didn't realize that you are descended from a celebrity. Just a nitpick: avoid cropping people in half (the guy at the left edge).   Posted: 05/23/2021 15:44:26

Thanks for your suggested crop. Roland was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne and died in 778--long before our time! Although I have not read it, there is a story about him titles "Song of Roland". I have seen the name on all kinds of places in Germany and other places in Europe. There is a Roland Company in the US which makes musical instruments and another which produces food products.   Posted: 05/23/2021 20:01:50

I like Roland image. Not sure what he is made of? The building in the back speaks Germany.   Posted: 05/24/2021 13:24:22

The main interest is the statue and old building behind, the black eagle on the shield just oozes German culture and history. I trimmed out the very modern building on the r/h side which makes Roland more dominant.   Posted: 05/25/2021 11:45:17

I don't remember whether I was in Bremen long ago but I do know The Bremen Town Musicians from the Brothers Grimm and know of The Song of Roland. There have been many picture book versions of The Bremen Town Musicians over the years. I like the statute a lot and hadn't thought about it, but I do like David's suggestion to crop the right side. The man on the right somehow bothered me and the crop makes a stronger image to my eye.
