November 2024 - Nikolaevsk church
About the Image(s)
In 2006, we drove an RV from the Winnebago factory in Iowa to Anchorage and then rented a car to see more of Alaska. We visited some Russian settlements on the Kenai Peninsula. This church is in Nikolaevsk. More information can be found at the link below. The photo was taken with a Nikon D70S and 18-200mm lens at 33mm. SS was 1/500, aperture f 11 and ISO 200. I know it is a bit tight, but there wasn't much room around the church.

Judy, that sounds like quite a hike from Iowa to Alaska but I'm sure you had a great time. We too stopped at a church of old believers on the Kenai Peninsula but don't recall seeing this one. I like your composition including some of the background hills in it and although I wish there had been a wee bit more space under the first cupula, at least you can see the second cross. The colors are pretty although a bit soft. Very nice.   Posted: 11/18/2024 17:43:46

Shirley, the trip was so long ago that it is hard to remember the setting. We saw several churches in the area and I had to search to find the name. We rented a car after we turned in the RV so we could see more of Alaska. Still haven't seen as much as we'd like after 7 trips there!   Posted: 11/26/2024 09:15:37

I like the composition of the closeup of the church. I don't want to see more of the background to detract from the subject. I'm wondering how many people will fit in the building and how many attend. It is well taken care of.

This is an image that well showcases Alaska's Russian heritage, with its onion-dome churches. The colorful murals on the front add to the interest. The rolling hills in the background also contribute to the sense of place. You could crop off a bit of the uninteresting foreground.   Posted: 11/22/2024 08:32:50

I agree with cropping the foreground. I tried to straighten the church as much as I could and lost space in the process.   Posted: 11/26/2024 09:16:38

Judy, I understand why you shot the photo the way you did, but it does feel a little tight on the left side. I tappears there was a tree on the left. Was there anything else that would hav distracted? Depending on how the tree appeared, it might have been a nice addition to the composition. Cropping off more of the foreground would made it feel even tighter, it think. Beautiful and interesting church.   Posted: 11/25/2024 10:17:23

Michael, it was so long ago that I don't remember what was on the left, but I must have cut it out as uninteresting.   Posted: 11/26/2024 09:17:54

Nice image of the colorful church. The murals are very nice. Would a vertical shot been possible to see more detail on the murals?   Posted: 11/25/2024 12:43:08

A classic Russian Orthodox place of worship and those murals add SO much interest. I agree that some foreground could be cropped, but what a very interesting submission Judy.   Posted: 11/25/2024 15:05:06
