House in Kuti by N. Sukumar, APSA

November 2024 - House in Kuti

About the Image(s)

Colourful house at Kuti village, at 12,300' altitude in Pithoragarh district of the Uttarakhand Himalayas, India. Reportedly 400 years old. This is the last village in India en route to Adi Kailash peak. Most villagers retreat to lower elevations in winter, leaving only a handful of year-round residents in the village. Canon EOS XTi with Tamron EFS 17-85 mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens @ 20 mm. f/11 @ 1/25 sec. ISO: 400.

The colors are wonderful and this is a very pleasing image. I'm curious how the house survives if most of the residents go lower for part of the year. Do the people who stay all year go down for supplies? It looks like winter from the naked trees!
I enjoy looking at this photo and always find your descriptions very interesting.

It is autumn (photographed last month). Those aren't trees, but poles placed there probably for some ceremonial purpose. There are ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) personnel who visit occasionally, check up on the residents in winter and bring in necessary supplies.   Posted: 11/20/2024 01:57:58

This is a very interesting and pleasing image due to the detail , texture and color changes along the front of the building. There is a lot to hold the eye. I thought about cropping the left side of the image to white space but I didn't like it as much, as interesting detail was lost. Nice job!   Posted: 11/25/2024 10:28:10

Interesting image with multiple colors and designs. I wonder if the designs have any meaning. The annual plan for staying there vs going lower might be very interesting. Also what do they do there for a living etc.   Posted: 11/25/2024 13:05:37

Wonderful colours and textures on the facade of these buildings! When viewing the open door and steps I feel a sense of mystery, and I would be keeping my fingers crossed to be invited in for chai! The Himalaya is somewhere I have had on my bucket list for donkey`s years, though I think going above 12000 feet would void my insurance these days. A splendid submission Sukumar!!!   Posted: 11/25/2024 15:21:37

I could just say ditto to all the comments. I love the color and texture and as always, appreciate your description. I would have trouble at that altitude! The doorways alone would make good images. Well done.   Posted: 11/26/2024 09:09:55
