Navajo Sacred Ground by Michael Smith

November 2024 - Navajo Sacred Ground

About the Image(s)

I am not sure this qualifies as a Travel Photograph, but I thought it did, as the adobe bell tower indicated a location. I thought it said something about the simplicity of the native Americans this cemetery belongs to. It was taken at the Taos Pueblo in Taos New Mexico. I was careful not to trespass on this ground and did not enter the cemetery. I was struck by the sense of peace and calm that I felt while photographing this scene.

Michael, this is for sure a Photo Travel image in my opinion. It includes not only the crosses signifying people who died but includes the remains of the San Jeronimo Church apparently build in the 1600s!!! as well. I looked it up. We were here once. I like your composition as well taken at the angle which shows the mountain behind but the pretty sky with billowly clouds. Nicely done.   Posted: 11/18/2024 17:57:03

This is a VERY sharp image and I like looking at all the details. I too have a feeling of peace as I view this. The sky is a nice contrast to the rest of the photo. An excellent composition and definitely travel to me.   Posted: 11/18/2024 20:09:58

I think this definitely conveys a unique sense of place and qualifies as a Travel Photograph. My eyes are immediately drawn to the tilted crosses as well as to the adobe bell tower. I like the image overall, but I find the prominent cropped off cross at the lower left (as well as the pipe at bottom center) rather distracting.   Posted: 11/22/2024 07:59:10

Yes, this is a travel image. I agree that the partial cross should be eliminated. The image is very sharp throughout with a good composition.   Posted: 11/25/2024 13:16:04

Again I like Sukumar`s crop, when we were on Navajo lands some years ago (Antelope canyon and Monument Valley), I too was enthralled by their pride in the history and culture of the Navajo nation.
Your image is tack sharp and well exposed, and certainly conveys the peace and calm mentioned in your deor - a great PT photograph Michael.   Posted: 11/25/2024 15:31:16

Excellent photo and I agree it is a travel image. I like Sukumar's crop. You could also clone out the distracting parts and use it in PID. It is a peaceful scene and makes the simpler life look better than our often too rushed lives.   Posted: 11/26/2024 09:13:14
