November 2024 - Bircham Windmill-Norfolk
About the Image(s)
North Norfolk is an area of England very similar to Holland - and the flat landscape features windmills. My image is the result of standing in a field for 25 minutes until a beam of sunlight fell on the mill, and by spot metering for the roof of the building the highlights show texture and detail to portray an almost 3D effect.

David, only you would have the patience to stand 25 minutes until a beam of sunlight fell on the mill but good for you. You have alot more patience than I do. There is alot of texture and detail in the windmill and I like the shadow also. Composition is good though I might crop it a little bit on the left side. Very nice photo and well done.   Posted: 11/18/2024 17:38:33

Yes, he does! I could never stand that long!   Posted: 11/26/2024 08:51:53

You are always so patient and as a result, you get very good results! I have no suggestions for improvement and everything is just right from the clouds to the bit of grass at the bottom of image. After reading Shirley's Comment, I agree that the left could be cropped a bit. We only see part of the cloud as is and the lighthouse
is still not centered. That is an interesting windmill and I like the shadow. A winner with or without the crop!

Immediately on reading the constructive comments from Esther and Shirley I did crop and, as the windmill is still off centre, I like it! Thank you girls!!!   Posted: 11/19/2024 04:14:06

At first I wondered whether you had selectively desaturated the background sky, which I believe is not allowed under PT rules, but realized how you'd shot the image after reading your description. That's a really dark and ominous sky you have there! But, with help from your sunbeam, it sets off the windmill very effectively.
Yes, I like the cropped image much better!   Posted: 11/22/2024 08:48:48

I really love your image of the windmill. Having just returned from the Netherlands, with similar skies, I appreciate what it took to wait on a beam of light. Unfortunately when on a river cruise, I didn't have the opportunity to wait, although we go lucky a couple of moments. I like the cropped version as well. The dark sky is a perfect background for the white top and sails. From what I learned in Kinderdijk, the smaller wheel atop the windmill keeps it headed into the wind, as apposed to having to move it by hand.

You are correct Michael - the small wheel is to have the sails facing the prevailing wind. I worked in Haarlem for some years and took many windmills, I do hope to see some of your Netherlands images in coming months.   Posted: 11/25/2024 14:40:51

I like the windmill, however, I think I would have liked to see the windmill design. Maybe it was not work seeing. The cropped version is nice also.   Posted: 11/25/2024 12:49:13

David, As usual great lighting and composition. The angle of the blades (that may not be the correct term) is perfect. It does make a nice vertical, but I also like the way you have it. I just watched the PSA webinar with Cole Thompson who says there are no rules and I agree!   Posted: 11/26/2024 08:55:06
