January 2025 - Istanbul at night

About the Image(s)

As we passed the Blue Mosque at various times - our hotel was around the corner, I took the opportunity to capture the very elaborate floodlighting that is used during the hours of darkness.
As with all of my night shots - I try to utilise the "blue hour" that avoids the sky being totally black.
As ever my image stabilised lens and monopod support kept a reasonable shutter speed and aperture.

David, a very compelling image of the Blue Mosque. You mention that you shot this a the "blue hour" to avoid the totally black sky, but to my eye the sky appears totally black. Am I missing something? I actually like that in the photo as it makes the purples and blues stand out.   Posted: 01/23/2025 08:02:05

It shows blue for sure. Well done with your faithful monopod. I don't really mind the tilting, but sraightened it to see the difference. Interestingly the NIK perspective made the towers disappear, so I used the correction in Elements.   Posted: 01/25/2025 11:46:32

The sky looks black to me too. I like the symmetry of the image, and the blue colour really stands out. A very fine image indeed! To me, the perspective contributes to the sense of scale of the structure.   Posted: 01/25/2025 23:58:11

Your monopod serves you well, along with your good eye! I took many pictures of the Blue Mosque (I've been to Istanbul twice) but not like this. The floodlighting is very effective and the sky does look black to me! This is an excellent image!   Posted: 01/26/2025 23:33:27

David, a stunning image of the Blue Mosque though this certainly was not taken during the blue hour. I too enjoy the symmetry of the image as is. The blue makes it a very unusual image. Nicely done.   Posted: 01/30/2025 22:21:22
