Mount Whitney by Esther Steffens

February 2025 - Mount Whitney

About the Image(s)

In October I took part in two workshops with Awake the Light and Mollie Isaacs in Death Valley and Lone Pine. My entry this month is from Lone Pine. This is Mount Whitney, CA., the tallest summit in the contiguous lower 48 states. It is 14,494 feet. We went from the lowest spot, Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America to a view of Mount Whitney. I had done this in the lower 1980s with my family when we lived in Modesto, CA. and spent a week or so in March. DV was VERY hot at that time. We worked around the hottest part of the day in this past October and it was comfortable.

One does have to be careful when visiting DV! I am not sure if you took this from DV or Lone Pine. We have been to both places and many times to DV and surroundings. It shows the mountain well and the light is nice and subtle. The sky goes well with the foreround. I watched Mollies program on abstracts recently and she was a frequent judge for my club before she moved from the area.   Posted: 02/20/2025 12:30:47

I love the lighting on the mountain. I am not really familiar with Mt. Whitney, so I was surprised that there was no snow on the mountain. The photo reminds me of images that you see of the Dolomites in Italy. You captured very nice texture variations from the rocks in the bottom to the top of the peak, and again the lighting on the top of the mountain makes the image. Nice.   Posted: 02/22/2025 10:05:37

Nice view of the crags of Mt. Whitney. The light on the crest is nice, but the foreground and middle ground being in deep shadow detracts from the impact in my opinion. Also I'm not sure how unique and identifiable it would be for a travel image in the view of some judges. I have been to Death Valley a few times; it is a fascinating, but forbidding landscape.   Posted: 02/23/2025 01:35:27

Good for you to have been able to see Mt Whitney when you were there. The crags at the top of the mountain are nice. I too wish there was more detail in the middle portion though because as someone else mentioned it may not be as identifiable for photo travel. You are quite the traveler, Esther. Nice job.   Posted: 02/23/2025 22:35:34

That light catching the top peaks is the icing on the cake Esther. Perhaps you arrived at this viewpoint either too late or too early to also have light in other areas of the frame?
It is great to see you are out and about on photographic adventures, I look forward to seeing many more from this trip.   Posted: 02/25/2025 05:57:38
