A fisherman on Inle Lake by David Stout, EPSA, EFIAP

April 2025 - A fisherman on Inle Lake

About the Image(s)

The recent disaster to befall on Burma last Friday brought concern for some friends made when visiting that country, I have contacted one who is safe in Yangon. I think it appropiate to submit an image I took on that journey for this month, a young man - hopefully also a survivor, plying his skills at catching fish in Inle lake.

This brings back such good memories of our 2 week trip to Myanmar and my thoughts too go to those wonderful people we met who work hard and need so little. I am not sure I understand what the fisherman is doing in this image though. Is he starting to throw a net? They are so comfortable standing on one leg on a boat standing up it makes me nervous.
Good background too where another fisherman is doing the same thing. Nice image, David.   Posted: 04/12/2025 20:27:38

I was in Myanmar in 2013, a few months after Obama was there. Things were really looking up for the country. They welcomed tourists. I loved the temples, stupas and pagodas. I am so sorry about the recent earthquake.
I enjoyed the Inle Lake region and took lots of photo of the men fishing. I notice that this boat has a motor and I don't remember seeing that.
Your image depicts what many in the Inle Lake area do for a living. Well presented, David.

Your image certainly shows local culture and the background with another fisherman adds interest. Well done as usual. I am sorry I never got to Myanmar--except for a short trip from Northern Thailand. The founder of my camera club spent some of her early years there and I remember her stories about that. She died last year at 103! She was always an inspiration to our club and certainly to me. I am lucky to have one of her prints.   Posted: 04/21/2025 15:19:46

Never been to Myanmar. I like that you have a great background along with the boat and fisherman. Good story.   Posted: 04/23/2025 09:33:22

Nice view - of the fisherman at work, the lake and mountains in the background. The fisherman seems natural and unposed. Although Myanmar is my neighbouring country, and my father and grandparents lived there before WWII, I've never been there. (My father, aunt and grandmother had to evacuate Rangoon - now Yangon - on the last boat out before the city fell to the Japanese army, while my grandfather, as postmaster, was considered an "essential service employee" and had to be on duty until the Japanese were at the gates of the city, whereupon he was ordered to WALK back to India over 7 mountain ranges, through dense crocodile-infested swamps and tiger-infested jungles, leaving the roads free for the retreating British Indian Army).   Posted: 04/23/2025 12:47:08

This is a very nice image that tells a lot about the lifestyle of this country. I like the way that you were able to capture the motion of the net being thrown, while capturing the fishermen very sharply. Nicely done. The mountains in the background and the other fisherman provides nice depth to the image. Unfortunately, I haven't been there and with the current situation, unlikely that I will be able to.   Posted: 04/24/2025 13:12:05
