Amsterdam Canal at Night by Michael Smith

May 2025 - Amsterdam Canal at Night

About the Image(s)

This was taken in November while we were on an evening cruise on the canals. It was taken with my iPhone 15 ProMax, ISO 4000, F1.8, 1/17s. I was fortunate to capture the bicyclist crossing the bridge.

Your lighting is beautiful, Michael, and you were lucky to see a bicyclist cross the canal before you entered under it. The lights surrounding the entrance are lovely with a great cloudy sky above. Aren't you amazed that with your iphone you can see many bridges up ahead too? It is a great photo travel image and seeing the lighted bridge with the cyclist, in addition to other bicycles parked on the bridge along with the unique Amsterdam architecture certainly screams "Amsterdam". Great job.   Posted: 05/06/2025 17:14:34

Great shot of Amsterdam at night and with a cell phone too. I think we will see more phone images. It is so easy and they are getting better all the time. The bridge and lights are very appealing and the cyclist is the icing on the cake.
Well done.   Posted: 05/19/2025 14:11:22

I like the image looking down the canal at the other bridges. Great idea.

Another winner in my opinion! The the reflection of the bridge lights in the water is wonderful. It shimmers! The cyclist is a great bonus! I have no suggestions and think this is wall worthy! I could look at it often and still be intrigued.
I have found that my phone camera often does better outside at night than my "big" cameras.   Posted: 05/23/2025 21:53:42

I agree. I think phone cameras generally do better at nailing the exposure for night images.   Posted: 05/23/2025 23:04:22

My eyes were immediately drawn to the reflections in the water, then to the lights on the bridge, the bicyclist, the buildings lining the canal, and finally to the fascinating series of bridges beyond, framed by the arc of the one in the foreground. The moving bicyclist is a little soft here, but that's probably OK.   Posted: 05/23/2025 23:08:41

A wonderful shot that - as Shirley states, oozes Amsterdam. The timing, lighting, and composition suggests to me that you MUST enter this in International PT exhibitions!!!   Posted: 05/24/2025 06:44:11

I have entered it recently and so far has not received an acceptance.   Posted: 05/28/2025 08:51:15
